So, After a long time of periodical thought, I’ve decided to change the name and URL of my blog & website. I realize that “No big deal or anything” is no longer really a name that I think truly reflects how I feel I stand for anymore. But that’s not all! This is no big deal to anyone but me, but I have been thinking about tightening up my branding / identity and sense of self as a person/creative gal/existence on the internet too. And I’m excited!

I want my blog to be the primary website that I send anyone I meet to in regards to networking, design, friendship, anything really. I’m trying to making things more simple for myself. And since I want this blog to be an extension of myself, the name needs to be more simple as well. I won’t tell you what it is yet, but pretty soon NBD will be redirected to my new site & if it never even happened! (that’s right, I’ve already transferred all of the content & layout onto another URL! It was pretty easy.)

I just want a nice looking logo and a more solid set of business cards (you know, a business card without three websites on it?) & personal identity design materials (and a stamp. because I love stamps.)

This way, you can come to my site, and links to my design work & warpaint & everything else will just be there. Like a kristen home base. Okay, that’s all for now. Stay tuned!

There is bound to be plenty of love that comes out of something when there is a lot of love put into it. What brings me to write about helping others through design is company that I am excited to be doing a new design for called  SEVENLY. Sevenly is an organization that perfectly combines gorgeous & trendy design with giving to charities! They do this with weekly cause campaigns where people can buy a lovely tee shirts, sweatshirts, etc. with an original design based on the subject matter of the cause – and they donate part of the profit to charity. That’s pretty awesome! I love it! Above are some of my favorite designs.

If you visit their web site, you will find their weekly cause and the shirts for sale (and let me tell you, from experience, those look like quality & comfortable selection of garments. I wonder who prints them? ;) Hmm…) You can also visit their  past campaigns  section for a selection of their past causes & designs!

There was once a time when I’ve asked myself “Dear Self, What is it that you are actually doing with your life & carreer that is actually benefiting others???” I then experienced a tiny spout of self-doubt and comparison. There are plenty of occupations out there that are 100% defined by helping others all day, (i.e. nurses, vets, volunteers, social workers, charity organizers, therapists, nutritionists, the list goes on..) and what am I doing? (Cute drawings, blogging, obsessing over letterforms, and making pretty screen prints.) Sounds awesome to me! So I told my brain to can it because the down-talk is seriously a bunch of garbage. The everlasting result is the most uplifting thought ever. Good design & pretty things & creative creators make people happy all of the time! Oh yeah!

I LOVE design and always have the constant urge to create, mostly because it makes me happy and I like to work – But the energy & love I put into the things I like to make isn’t just for myself – I am always thinking “How can my next project make someone smile? Like, even just a little bit, you know?” That is where it truely makes me happy. There have been times when I’ve been at art shows, or online, or saw a visual or message somewhere that really gave me that “super happy – excited – warm – good  – YES!! – laughter – identification – made-my-day” feeling (see: anything ever by Laura Berger). Whenever anyone buys one of my prints for themselves, or for a gift, or wants me to design their logo – I feel a zap of joy. On top of feeling grateful that someone chose MY design or ME as their designer for something – It just makes me so glad that I enable myself to use my creative talents to make just a small difference in someones day. <3

This year I’ve been taking Valentines Day more seriously than usual. This is, in part, because I get to be a vendor at the VLNTNSDYMRKT hosted by Pot & Box in Detroit! There are going to be so many (THIRTY-EIGHT) lovely vendors who are artisans and makers selling everything from flowers to cookies to jewelry to super unique hand made treasures. So, I’ve made a plethora of valentines (and invited everyone in Warpaint to participate too!) to sell at the event with love. Above is one of my favorites of my bunch. We’re screen printing them all on one big sheet with black & red ink. I also plan on selling a limited selection of art prints & lovely printed maps. Needless to say, I’m super excited! Stay tuned for photos!

I also plan on having a post-valentines “Still In Love” Etsy discount sale on the leftover cards & valentines-inspired prints. <3

*note to tattoo artists // enthusiasts*  I know that traditionally hand & knuckle tattoos usually face outward, but I really wanted the hand right side up & reading, so, I mean, you know. <3

I came across Leah Duncan on Etsy this morning and instantly fell in love with all of her work. I love the nature inspired illustration and dreamy & folky, yet modern & sophisticated, hand made feel to her art. She makes me want to sit down and just draw! Specializing in surface & pattern design and illustration, Leah works out of Texas. Her work has been featured at Target, Urban Outfitters & more. I’ve probably seen her work in the wild and didn’t even know it. I love coming across artists like this because it gives me a higher appreciation of pretty things I see at stores. All of these photos are from her shop. (Those adorable scarves are perfect for spring, just sayin’).

So I’m gearing up for the Valentines Day Market! We thought we would make another Land Made recycled atlas print to go along with the various valentines that myself and several other VGKids & Warpaint folks are coming up with!

The saying is (ever-so-appropriately) inspired by this song.

The little design above will be printed on 8.5 x 11 recycled atlas pages. I have to credit Steve for being the idea man behind this one. ;)

By the way, the texture I used for this is from a pack of four free textures  I just posted on the Warpaint blog. Snag that!

Hanging out after hours at a screen printing shop and catching posters while documenting the printing process is a print designer’s dream come true! (Unless of course, you’re a designer and ALSO a printer // awesome enough to print your own things all of the time).

I am one SUPER LUCKY gal to be able to have these prints made the way they are – and not to mention, having a boyfriend who likes me enough to deal with my crazy split fountain layers on huge sheets of paper (Although, he knows that I will never set up a design or series like this again, since it is definitely on the more difficult side). Anyway, meet Steve, boyfriend & printer extraordinaire. I give a great deal of thanks to him for helping me in making my printing dreams come true.

Psssst.. by the way – the real reason I ran a re-print of my collage triptych prints because a super lovely shop bought some wholesale from me! What an exciting thing!!! All I need to do is get them cut, stamp the backs and send them off. (Another post about this will be made very soon once I take proper photos of the prints & they update their site.) Hooray!

Sometimes I just feel like making a little somethin’ somethin’ just for the sake of making.  I’m excited that I started (and have continued to put energy towards) my postcard project – it cures the little constant itch inside to make something for fun. I’ve been cutting out & storing away collage pieces from some of my favorite hoarded thrift store books that I’ve hesitated to cut up… because the contents are so, well, awesome. But there is no point of them just hanging out on my shelves! Their beauties must now go into the world. The above cutouts are from a vintage pocket book called “Stars” and the background is from an old world atlas book. I love that just a few little things can turn into a simple & fun design.  End result:
